Pierce Brosnan has been ordered to pay fines after sharing photos of himself standing on restricted thermal areas of Yellowstone National Park last year.
The 70-year-old actor, renowned for his roles as James Bond, has been fined $500 and directed to make a $1,000 contribution to the Yellowstone Forever Geological Fund, as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Wyoming.
Brosnan, who was issued a citation in December, admitted guilt to foot travel in a thermal area, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
In November, Brosnan had posted images on Instagram depicting himself standing on a thermal feature within Yellowstone National Park at Mammoth Hot Springs.
Federal prosecutors stated, "There are signs posted in the area that warn visitors of the dangers of thermal features and state that visitors must remain on the designated boardwalks and trails."
The National Park Service (NPS) conducted an investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ariel Calmes prosecuted the case. Calmes requested the court to sentence Brosnan to two years' probation and impose the maximum fine of $5,000.
A spokesperson for Brosnan did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Yellowstone's thermal basins are among the most popular attractions in the national park, featuring hot springs, geysers, and other geological wonders.
However, the National Park Service cautions that "the ground in thermal areas is fragile and thin, with scalding water just beneath the surface," emphasizing that walking in these areas is "hazardous and can damage the delicate natural resources within the park."
The NPS advises visitors to "exercise extreme caution around thermal features by staying on designated boardwalks and trails" to ensure their safety. According to the NPS safety guidelines for Yellowstone, the geological formations have the potential to "cause severe or fatal burns," as "scalding water lies beneath most of the thin, breakable crust surrounding hot springs."
