A medical examiner's report released on Wednesday has determined the death of Oklahoma student Nex Benedict to be a suicide.
Nex, who was 16 years old and identified as transgender, using both he and they pronouns according to friends and family, passed away on February 8th, the day after an altercation at his school. His name has since become a rallying point for LGBTQ activists, who assert that a wave of legislation targeting the community has created a less secure environment for queer and transgender students like Nex.
Reports suggest that Nex had confided in his mother about facing bullying at school due to his gender identity. Additionally, body camera footage released by the police last month, recorded in the hours following the school altercation, captures Nex lying in a hospital bed. In the footage, Nex recounts to a police officer how three students attacked him after he splashed water on them in response to their bullying of him and his friend over their attire.
On February 21, the Owasso Police Department disclosed initial findings from an autopsy report indicating that Nex's death was not due to physical trauma. However, days afterward, a department spokesperson clarified that they had not ruled out the possibility that the altercation could have played a role in or led to Nex's passing.
Requests for comments from Jacob Biby, the attorney representing the Benedict family, and a spokesperson for Owasso Public Schools, went unanswered at the time of reporting.
